And with yesterday’s fireworks in Berlin, the year begins! This is going to be an exciting year I’m sure. For one, the world is going to end. Personally, I have made many changes to my lifestyle and will now begin to experience the day-to-day of them. I’m not at CouchSurfing anymore. I’m not traveling all the time anymore. I’m building a new life in one of my favorite cities: Berlin. I have joined a start-up here called 9flats.com that continues with what I’ve been working on for so long: removing obstacles to traveling and getting to know other cultures.

I just spent a while playing around with Google’s AJAX APIs and I’ve come to the conclusion that although it has its advantages, it also has its drawbacks. Advantages: It’s ridiculously simple to include common JS libraries into a page. <script src="http://www.google.com/jsapi"></script> <script> google.load("prototype", "1.6.1"); google.load("prototype", "1.8.3"); </script> Is all it takes to include the latest version of these very popular libraries. And probably the greatest advantage of all: there’s a chance that these libraries have already been loaded by the browser coming to your site and are still in the cache. Disadvantages: By far, the greatest disadvantage that I find is that more calls are being done to more domains. Of course www.google.com is usually available, but making multiple calls impacts performance. In Turkey, where I currently happen to be traveling by, it’s extremely noticeable. The country’s ISP has DNS filtering and it sometimes takes up to several seconds to resolve a domain name, even if it’s www.google.com. I tried using google.load for these libraries on this site and I experienced consistently lower load times as many of the components on these pages are dependent on these libraries being loaded before fully rendering the page, the user experience was degraded until the google domain was resolved. More about this: http://code.google.com/apis/ajax/documentation/

Ever wondered how to make this javascript duo not slow down your user’s experience? Well you have to compress them and pack them. Yahoo has some really good tools for that (YUI Compressor). You need to have a working version of Java and some patience. I wonder why they aren’t just available for download in an optimized form already… I just went through the steps to optimize the latest versions of Prototype and Scriptaculous for this site. The following JS contains both, prototype 1.6.3 and scriptaculous 1.8.3 packed into one file. You can download it here: prototype161_scriptaculous183_packed (just 90Kb!)

Yes. That’s how it is. Alaska. What ever happened to riding to India on a motorcyle and living on the road for 3 years? Well, I got distracted. That’s what. But oh!, let me tell you about the distraction. The distraction is called CouchSurfing and I love it! After having lived some amazing experiences around the world with them in places as close, far, common and exotic as Rotterdam Netherlands, Copperopolis California, Pai Thailand and now Homer Alaska I can comfortably say that this ain’t that bad. I’ve seen a lot of change in CouchSurfing as an organization since I arrived. I’m responsible for a good chunk of it too. Let’s change the world. You see that image in the header of the blog? That’s my back yard.

Hey all! It’s been a long time since I updated this (probably the most popular phrase in blogs), but now I’m a bit more settled down than I used to which means I have a computer and a regular Internet connection as well as a big house and a daily show, so here I am and ready to keep on writing (probably the second most popular phrase in blogs, just worded differently). In an unexpected turn of events, from having no plan to now having one, I’m going to Yosemite! Me and my friends here in California will be hanging out with Rachel down at Yosemite for the weekend. It sounds exciting… though I don’t exactly know what to expect. Maybe that’s why. What I do know is that it’ll sure be good to do some exercise again. I’ve been sitting around too much and making sure that the hot-tub stays nice and warm Oh! I’ve been going through my pictures and I hope to start uploading some pictures from the past months this coming week (most popular phrase in a web-gallery) and finally comment them (most popular phrase in a photoblog). It would be unfair to have made you wait so long to find updated content on this page just to go around writing common stuff without any sense of originality. So let me make a poem for you guys: recipe cold relaxing therapy hot munchkins peach beaches here sweet alaska on the rocks bite a banana in the ass....
